About Mission San José
Mission San Jose was founded on June 11, 1797 by Father Fermin Francisco de Lasuen on a site which was part of a natural highway by way of the Livermore Valley to the San Joaquin Valley. It is the fourteenth of the 21 Spanish Missions in Alta California. They were founded to secure Spain’s claim to this land and to teach the native people Christianity and the Spanish way of life. This is a fantastic little mission to go to if you have some spare time on the weekends. It's not a very big mission, but the exhibits are well thought out and informational, with plenty of facts and historical data to provide context to the items you're looking at. There is a gift shop on site with plenty of little items to buy to remember your visit here, and there are also bathrooms. The bathrooms were clean, and so was the rest of the facility. There isn't much parking on site, but I had no problem pulling up and getting one of the parking spots on the weekend. There are additional areas to park across the street if necessary. There is a $15 entrance fee to enter into the mission, so that's something to be aware of, especially if you're coming from Europe as there you do not need to pay any entry fee to visit any Catholic site.
