The Great Valley Museum (GVM) is a natural history and science museum located on the West Campus of Modesto Junior College in Modesto, California. The museum focuses on the natural history, wildlife, geology, and ecosystems of California's Central Valley through interactive exhibits, live animal displays, educational programs, a planetarium, and hands-on science activities for visitors of all ages.
We used to come here every couple weekends when we lived in the area, and we loved it, but our kids never cared about the exhibits. This time, now that the kids are early school-age, they really enjoyed it, and the reason they were engaged was because if the awesome staff and a scavenger hunt that involved exploring the exhibits.
Also, the native plant garden just outside is a short, pleasant walk, and the interactive outdoor dinosaur excavation sand pit is always a favorite.

At McHenry Mansion, a beautifully restored Victorian mansion in Modesto, CA. Built in 1883, this historic landmark has been welcoming visitors since 1983. Whether you're exploring its rich history, searching for the perfect event venue, or looking for unique gifts, McHenry Mansion offers an unforgettable experience.
I photographed a session at McHenry Mansion, and it’s such a beautiful historic location in Downtown Modesto. The property allows outdoor photography in the open courtyard area without a permit during tour hours, which is great for quick portraits or historic-style backdrops.
A heads-up for photographers: the security staff informed us that photos on the front steps aren’t allowed while tours are operating, so as not to disrupt visitors. We were able to get one photo before learning that rule, but they were very polite in explaining it.
Overall, the mansion is a charming spot for outdoor portraits, and as long as you follow the guidelines, it’s a lovely (and free!) option for sessions in Modesto.
